Martha and Dino De Laurentiis have snagged up film rights to the thriller series “The Sigma Force,” written by James Rollins.

Comprised of six books, the “Sigma Force” series involves a division of the U.S. Department of Defense’s DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) program housed beneath the Smithsonian in D.C. Staffed by a collection of “killer scientists” (adventurous scientists paired with military operatives), the Force investigates and secures threatenting scientific information through counterterrorism, research and covert ops.

The first book, “Sandstorm,” was published in 2004, and the most recent, “The Doomsday Key,” landed on the New York Times best-seller list this year. The film adaptation will involve a new story line developed especially for this project with an eye toward creating a franchise.

“James Rollins is a master storyteller,” said Dino De Laurentiis. “The ‘Sigma Force’ series is rich with complex characters and thrilling action plots, and we can’t wait to turn this treasure trove of amazing stories into a great film franchise.”

The two movies derived from Dan Brown novels, “The Da Vinci Code” and “Angels & Demons,” trekked similiar hybrid thriller terrain and grossed more than $1.2 billion worldwide combined. De Laurentiis has previously produced franchise success with “Manhunter,” “Hannibal,” “Red Dragon” and “Hannibal Rising,” all film adaptations of Thomas Harris novels.

Lorenzo De Maio is overseeing the “Sigma Force” project for the Dino De Laurentiis Co.

Repped by APA and Scovil Galen Ghosh, Rollins wrote the novelization of “Indiana Jones and the Kindgom of the Crystal Skull,” among other adventure thrillers. “Jake Ransom and the Howling Sphinx,” his follow-up to the young-adult novel “Jake Ransom and the Skull King’s Shadow,” will hit bookstores in the spring.

The seventh book in the “Sigma” series, “The Devil Colony,” is scheduled for release in August.

De Laurentiis is also developing a remake of “Barbarella” and a big-screen version of “MacGyver” for New Line Cinema.
